Every society wants to jump to a new tank or a deeper bore. We start at the top of the ladder, where the water is cheapest to find, and only descend when the rung above genuinely can't close the gap.

Reduce demand free first

Fix leaks, fit aerators and efficient fixtures, meter and monitor. The cheapest litre is the one you never lose.

Reuse low cost

Greywater for flushing and gardens; treated water from the society STP looped back for non-potable use.

Recharge

Rooftop rainwater harvesting and recharge wells — designed with the filtration that makes them work, not just to pass inspection.

Regenerate

Lake-linked and landscape recharge where the site allows — putting water back into the shared aquifer, not just your own tank.

Build new — last resort

New storage or supply infrastructure, sized to the gap that remains after rungs 1–4, and justified in writing.

The recharge-filtration wedge

A recharge well only recharges if the water reaching it is clean.

The city now asks for recharge wells alongside borewells. Done without a properly filtered rainwater feed, they do little — silt and first-flush runoff clog them within seasons, or worse, send contaminated water straight into the aquifer everyone shares. The mandate is right; it is widely built wrong.

SPACES specifies the part that makes it work: catchment, first-flush diversion, and filtration sized to your roofs and soil — so a recharge well actually puts clean water back into the ground, and your society meets the rule in a way that holds up. This is the engineering difference between a box ticked and a problem solved.
